Temple Style Sambar Recipe

This temple style sambar is prepared using mixed vegetables, dal, coconut and fresh ground masala. This is a very tasty and healthy sambar recipe prepared in Karnataka.


Generally temple style sambar is without onion-garlic. These no-onion and no-garlic recipes are called as satvika recipes. 


Ingredients 

Mixed veggies - 2 Cups 

Toor Dhal - 1/2 Cup 

Chopped Tomato - 1

Turmeric Powder- 1/2 tsp 

Tamarind- Gooseberry Sized

Salt to taste 

Jaggery - 1 tsp 

Chopped Coriander Leaves - few

Salt to taste 

For Masala Powder 

Oil - 1 tsp 

Dry Red Chilli - 4

Coriander Seeds - 3 tsp 

Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tsp 

Fenugreek Seeds - 1/4 tsp 

Gram Dhal - 3/4 tsp 

Urad Dhal - 1 tsp 

Grated Coconut - 1/2 Cup 

Hing / Asafoetida - 2 pinches 

Curry Leaves - few 



To Temper 

Oil - 1 tsp 

Mustard Seeds - 1/2 tsp 

Dry Red Chilli - 2

Curry Leaves - few 

Method 

Take toor dal in a pressure cooker and rinse. Add in turmeric powder, few drops of oil and required water. Cook the dal until soft by making 2 - 3 whistles.

Now to the same cooker add in chopped vegetables. Also add in a tsp of salt. Add in required water and cook until soft.

Heat oil in a pan, add the ingredients listed under "for masala" and roast it. Grind the roasted spices and grated coconut using a mixer grinder. Use required water and grind until smooth.

Then add this ground masala into the cooker, which has cooked vegetables and dal. Also add required water. Add in tamarind extract. Add in salt and jaggery. 

Temper it with oil, red chili, mustard seeds and curry leaves. Serve tasty temple style sambar recipe with hot rice.

Mix it well and bring it to boil. Add in coriander leaves and switch off the stove.
