Sweet and Sour Onion Chutney

 It’s a simple and tasty chutney. This is really easy to prepare. No need to cook anything apart from seasoning. This goes very well with idli, dosa, upma, kichadi and Pongal. I used regular chilli ( I don’t have stock of Byadagi chilli) If you have Mangalore chilli try this chutney. That will give amazing bright red color to this dish. Enjoy Well 😉 

The combination of the flavors of  red chilli, coconut, onions mixed with Jaggery and tamarind, will keep  you fascinated in its taste. 

Ingredients 

Peeled and Roughly Chopped Big Onions - 2

Dry Red Chilli - 5

Jaggery -  2 to 3 tsp ( as per your taste)

Tamarind -  gooseberry sized ball 

Kernel of Coconut 🥥 - 4 pieces (or)

Grated Coconut - 4 tsp 

Salt to taste 

For Seasoning 

Coconut Oil - 2 tsp 

Dry Red Chilli - 1

Mustard Seeds - 1/2 tsp 

Urad Dhal - 1/2 tsp 

Curry Leaves - few

Method 

Take a blender/mixer. Add chopped onions, red chilli, Jaggery, tamarind and coconut kernel along with salt and little salt and water.

Grind this chutney for about 1 and 1/2 minutes to 2 minutes. 

Transfer this chutney to serving bowl. 

In a pan, heat coconut oil. Add broken dry red chilli pieces. Toss it well and add mustard seeds. You have to wait until the mustard seeds gets roasted. 

Once it done, add urad dhal. Mix it under low flame and wait until gets golden brown in color. 

After gets the color then add some curry leaves. Then switch off the flame and the seasoning is ready.

Transfer this into chutney bowl. Serve with steamed idli/ dosa/ Pongal.
