Spicy Crab Kuzhambu

Spicy crab kuzhambu is my son & hubby’s favorite recipe. Coconut masala gives nice taste to this dish. I have already posted crab fry. This is my mother’s style crab kuzhambu. This dish goes well with hot steamed rice / idli / dosa…

Ingredients

Crab – 6
Chopped Onions – 1 cups (small)
Chopped Tomato – 2 (big)
Tamarind Juice – 3 tsp
Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
Fennel Seeds – 1 tsp
Pepper Seeds – 1 tsp
Garlic – 3 cloves
Coconut – 1/2 cup
Chilli Powder – 1 tsp
Coriander Powder – 2 tsp
Salt to taste

To temper

Vengaya Vadagam – 1 tsp
Curry Leaves – few
Coriander Leaves – few
Oil

Method

Wash and clean the crab and chop into small pieces. Then keep it aside.

In a pan, add fennel seeds, cumin seeds, pepper seeds and garlic then roast it well. Let it cool down then grind it together with coconut. Then keep it in a bowl. This masala will give the rich taste.

In a kadai, heat oil then add bay leaf, curry leaves, cinnamon & cardamom. Then add chopped onions and fry till it becomes mushy.

Now add crab pieces and fry well in oil with little bit salt. Then only it absorbs the saltiness.

Keep fry another 5 min in oil. Do not over fry. It should be cooked on a low flame.

Then add chopped tomatoes and keep fry until it mashed well with crab.

Now add chilli powder, coriander powder and tamarind juice, grinded masala and add 2 cups of water and cook for 10 minutes.

Now add the chopped coriander leaves. Keep cook on low flame for about 5 min.

Switch off the flame and serve with hot steamed rice.
