Raw Onion Chutney

This is instant chutney. If we won’t get much time to prepare any side dishes for idli and dosa, we can go for this dish. It’s very easy to prepare and simple dish. If you don’t have small onions, you can use big onions. But shallots are the key factor for this chutney.

To get best taste, I would recommend you all to use sesame oil with this dish. This goes well this idli, dosa and uthappam.

Ingredients

Shallots / Chinna vengayam / Sambar Onion – 1 cup
Chopped Tomatoes – 1
Red chilli – 7
Salt to taste
Chopped Coriander Leaves – few

To Temper

Sesame Oil /Gingelly Oil - 3 tsp
Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
Urad Dal – ½ tsp
Curry Leaves – few

Method

Soak small onions in warm water. It helps to remove the skin easily and without tears.

In a blender, add small onions, chopped tomatoes, red chilli, salt, coriander leaves and grind it well.

In a pan, heat sesame oil, add mustard seeds, urad dal, and curry leaves let it fry for a min.

Then add the ground chutney to kadai, and let it be another 3 to 4 minutes on a low flame.

Once the chutney becomes thick, and the raw smell disappeared then switch off the flame.

Now transfer into serving bowl, and serve with hot dosa, and idli…
