Udupi Tomato Rasam



Udupi Tomato Rasam is one of the most popular dishes in India. It is very easy to prepare. Anybody can prepare it at home. But, if you want the authentic taste then you will have to make sure you use the right ingredients. 
The most important ingredient for Udupi tomato rasam is the rasam powder. This goes well with steamed white rice, papad, pickle. 
Ingredients
Cooked Toor Dal – ½ cup
Chopped Tomatoes – 2
Tamarind – Lemon Sized Ball (soaked in hot water)
Water – 4 cups
Turmeric Powder – ¼ tsp
Sliced Green Chilli – 2
Jaggery – 1 tsp
Rasam Powder – 2 ½ tsp
Salt to taste
(To Temper)
Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp
Urad Dal – ½ tsp
Dry Red Chilly – 2
Curry Leaves – few
Chopped Coriander Leaves – few
Oil – 1 tsp
For Rasam Powder
Coriander Seeds – 2 tsp
Cumin Seeds – ½ tsp
Dry Red Chilli – 8
Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp
Fenugreek Seeds – ¼ tsp
Grated Coconut – 1 ½ tsp
Hing – ¼ tsp
Curry Leaves – few
Method
In a pan, add the ingredients one by one except coconut which are under “for rasam powder” and saute it for few seconds and let it cool down completely and make it as fine powder.
In a vessel, add tamarind water, salt, turmeric powder, green chilli, tomato, jaggery, and curry leaves. Let it boil for 7 to 8 min (Until the raw smell goes well).
Then add cooked toor dal, rasam powder, grated coconut, and let it boil for another 5 min.
Add chopped coriander leaves and simmer it and keep cook.
In another pan, heat oil. Add the tempering ingredients one by one and saute it for few seconds. Then transfer it into rasam.
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed white rice.
